Thursday’s Forthcoming Releases [Part I]

YIM YAMES 'Tribute To' [Release Date 03/08/09]

CD I LP: A few days after George Harrison passed away in 2001, Yim Yames [aka Jim James of My Morning Jacket fame] was moved to record this six-song EP of Harrison covers. Paying tribute to a man that he never met, but with whom he felt a special connection, Yim Yames [aka Jim James from My Morning Jacket]'s 'Tribute To' album mourns the loss of a legendary spirit while celebrating his enduring influence. Yames performs beautiful renditions of four cuts from George Harrison's classic 'All Things Must Pass' album, as well as two of the Beatles' tunes that he penned. These six tracks have a raw, minimalist feel, featuring little more than Yames' vocals and acoustic guitar. With all the space, the room in which the tracks were recorded truly serves as another instrument in the mix, creating an ethereal aura for a backdrop. From his warm, multi-layered vocals on opening track 'Long Long Long' to his near-whisper at the end of album closer 'All Things Must Pass', Yames sings in a fittingly intimate manner. In the album's liner notes, he refers to Harrison as "a prime example of the healing power of music". These words apply just as much to this release. As the final chords on 'Tribute To' ring out, one can't help but feel a deep, satisfying sense of catharsis.

WILD BEASTS 'Two Dancers' [Release Date 03/08/09]

CD I LP: Wild Beasts have made a record of earthly pleasures that sounds thrillingly widescreen, open and in awe of life; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possibilities of pleasure. 'Two Dancers' is a streamlined, minimalist and user friendly Wild Beasts, moving as God had designed them to, with equal grace and gusto, equally elegant and ugly. First single 'Hooting & Howling' was premiered on the Zane Lowe show.

ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS 'Aeon' / 'Crazy In Love' [Release Date 03/08/09]

7": 'Aeon' is one of the glowing highlights taken from the hugely acclaimed album 'The Crying Light', which debuted at #1 on the European chart. Antony And The Johnsons' audacious and impassioned cover of Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love', a long time live favourite, is being released officially here for the first time.

MALCOLM MIDDLETON 'Zero' [Release Date 03/08/09]

7": Casio tones? Toe-tapping beats? Handclaps? Rapping? Were it not for the lyrics about being buried with your partner, the distinctive Scottish burr and self-deprecating comments about wordy songwriters, you could be forgiven for mistaking 'Zero' as the work of someone other than Malcolm Middleton.

OUTCRY COLLECTIVE 'Articles' [Release Date 27/07/09]

CD: A labourer, a model, a pro wake-boarder and a politics student. Perhaps not the most obvious collective of people that you'd expect to create one of the finest British rock bands to emerge in recent times, but then again, Outcry Collective are no ordinary band. After growing up and meeting at schools in the Surrey area, the band came into fruition through a mutual admiration of everything that is good about rock music – utilising the intensity, heaviness and positivity of the music to act as their blueprint; a blueprint which still holds true to this day. Building on a healthy appreciation of The Bronx, Refused, Rage Against The Machine and Motorhead, Outcry Collective's own brand of fast, energetic punk 'n' roll quickly began to shine through while writing and practising in a barn in Pyrford, Surrey – the same barn that Pink Floyd originally formed in no less. Outcry Collective have taken their ferocious good time rock and roll out on the road, sharing stages with some of the best up and coming underground talent the UK has to offer, such as Meet Me In St Louis and Flood Of Red, as well as New York legends From Autumn To Ashes.

MORBID ANGEL 'Blessed Are The Sick' [Release Date 27/07/09]

DU I PD: High quality redux version of Morbid Angel's classic second album 'Blessed Are The Sick'. In addition to the original album, the release now boasts a brand new exclusive one hour documentary discussing the recording and release of the album, and highlighting the band's rise from underground heroes to worldwide flagbearers for the Death Metal scene. The documentary features new interviews with band and crew, and offers up the most intimate and detailed examination of Morbid Angel yet released. The Dual Disc is housed in a deluxe multi panel digipak. To celebrate the redux of one of Death Metal's most important releases, a special limited edition picture disc vinyl will also be issued, the first time the album has been available in this format. Originally released in 1991, the album elevated the entire scene to a more artistic, cultured level, taking influences from classical music and art to bring a touch of class to a previously maligned form of music. 'Blessed Are the Sick' is regularly featured in polls listing the best Death Metal albums of all time. Morbid Angel are acknowledged as one of the seminal Death Metal bands, having sold close to 2 million records worldwide in an illustrious career.

ISAAC HAYES 'The Man! Ultimate Isaac Hayes' [Release Date 20/07/09]

2-LP: For a new generation of Isaac Hayes fans who first came to him via samples and some outrageous threads, this is the ultimate compilation of his recordings for Stax and his own HBS productions between 1969 and 1977.

CD: The first official reissue of this infamous metallic heavy rock album from 1972 produced by Deep Purple's legendary front-man, Ian Gillan. The music is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that could easily pass for something from the early 80s New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene, it's that far ahead of it's time. Originally released on the UK Deram/Decca label, and now a favorite among vinyl collectors, the album is presented here from the original master tapes and also features pre-album demos, alternate mixes and a non-lp single track. The 20-page color booklet contains liner notes written by bassist Paul Dean, lyrics, press clippings and rare photos! A must have for fans of 70s hard rock and also the early 80s NWOBHM sound.

CD: JOHNNY GRIFFIN 'The Best Of' [Release Date 27/07/09]

2-CD: TONY BENNETT / BILL EVANS 'The Complete Recordings' [Release Date 27/07/09]

STONE ROSES 'Fools Gold' [Release Date 27/07/09]

C5: This is a one-off, Ltd 2 trk Cd single release, to compliment the set of 7" vinyl releases.

PINK 'Funhouse' [Release Date 03/08/09]

C5: "There's a showgirl inside Pink. Each song comes with its own visual theme, and some are stunning. And it's not enough merely to sing Sober while suspended upside down: Pink executes graceful back-flips while she's at it. What a terrific show." The Guardian 'Funhouse' is the brilliant new single from P!nk. An infectious pop-rock track with a classic fists-in-the-air chorus, 'Funhouse' is certain to become the fourth hit single from P!nk's massive album of the same name, which is fast approaching a million sales in the UK. 'Funhouse' was co-written by P!nk with Tony Kanal of No Doubt – who also appears in the video directed by longtime P!nk collaborator Dave Meyers ('So What', 'Stupid Girls') – and his writing partner Jimmy Harry, the same team who wrote P!nk's hit single 'Sober'.
