FLORENCE RAWLINGS 'A Fool In Love' [Release Date 07/09/2009]

CD: Signed to Dramatico Records [Katie Melua, Marianne Faithfull, Carla Bruni], Florence's album 'A Fool In Love' is an impressive debut of authentic soul, raw grooves and rhythm & blues that Music Week described as "a blend that could elevate her to the similar heady heights Melua enjoys. Classy stuff". Florence has recently performed at the Isle of Wight Festival which prompted festival promoter John Giddings to say "Florence Rawlings rocked the Big Top – a certain star of the future". Following her stunning debut performance at the Isle of Wight Festival, Florence Rawlings announced a run of high profile performances that are unprecedented for a new artist. Festival promoters have been extraordinarily quick off the mark in booking the 20 year old South Londoner, before a note of music has even been released, for some key spots including the main stage at Guilfest and Tuborg Stage at O2 Wireless. Florence first impressed Dramatico chairman Mike Batt seven years ago when she was 13 years old and Mike had just signed Katie Melua. Whilst Katie went on to sell millions of albums around the world, Florence stayed on at school, performed at clubs and pubs in her spare time ("I'd sing for whoever was willing to listen…at school, in clubs and bars…anywhere I could"), and kept in touch with Mike. Fast forward to 2009 and Florence has now recorded her album and it is definitely worth the wait. As well as singing a collection of powerful original songs penned by Mike Batt himself, including 'Hard To Get', Florence has discovered gems from days gone by and transformed them with her own charismatic soul style. Florence makes the Gladys Knight song 'Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me' completely her own whilst reinventing Allen Toussaint's long forgotten 'Riverboat' with vigorous production, uplifting horns and sleek dark overtones that give the song a lavish, ominous edge. Florence even performs a version of Chuck Berry's 'You Can't Catch Me' – following in the potentially daunting footsteps of The Rolling Stones and John Lennon she embraces it just as convincingly as rock and roll's elite. Little Richard's description of his own sound sums up Florence's electrifying style perfectly, 'Rock n' rollin', rhythm & blues soulin'. Florence Rawlings is set to be a modern soul star. In the words of the song – "jump on the wagon and join the dance".

SLIPKNOT 'Slipknot' [Release Date 09/09/2009]

CD/DVD: Hailing from the 'middle of nowhere' – Des Moines, Iowa – Slipknot are a true phenomenon of modern Metal. Fortified with an arsenal of blistering music saturated with screams, drums, searing riffs, sampling, scratches and melody, Slipknot's music runs the scale from eerily thought-provoking to utterly terrifying. Anyone who saw their flawless headline set at this year's Download Festival will know that, when it comes to flattening and flooring an audience, Slipknot have few peers. Last year the Grammy Award winning nontet came back with their fourth album, 'All Hope Is Gone', recorded in Slipknot's home state and co-produced by the band and Dave Fortman [Evanesence] and mixed by Colin Richardson [Machine Head]. 'All Hope Is Gone', which debuted in the UK Top 5 and reached Gold status in a matter of months, is more of a statement than a record. Corey Taylor comments, "Every album we have made is a statement about that space in time. I think this era is the most mature, most beautiful and the most powerful. We have made an album that will show the road behind, the road ahead, and where we are as men. I think it's the best thing I've ever made. And I challenge anyone to prove me wrong". However, 10 years ago it all started with their self-titled debut Hailed as a landmark in Metal music, their self-titled album has now, remarkably, reached Platinum status in the UK and houses numerous songs – 'Wait & Bleed', 'Spit It Out', 'Surfacing' etc – that still form a vital part of their live set. Even now, a decade on, the album (produced by Ross Robinson) sounds as fresh and exciting as the first time you heard it. This special edition features a mammoth 8 extra tracks plus a bonus DVD of rare and unseen footage from the 1st album cycle, compiled by the band's visionary Clown. All this is packaged in a dazzling digipack with a 20-page booklet and expanded artwork.

JOHN MAYALL 'Tough' [Release Date 07/09/2009]

CD: 'Tough' is the new studio album from John Mayall, his sixth for Eagle Records, and is well titled with a harder hitting feel and a real edge that sets it apart from his recent albums. After a long period with a stable line-up of the Bluesbreakers, 'Tough' sees Mayall working with a new group of musicians that has clearly revitalised him and acted as a spur to his creativity. Now approaching his 76th birthday, Mayall shows no sign of slowing down and will spend much of 2009 touring Europe and America with the new band. Affectionately regarded as the 'Godfather of British Blues', Mayall's influence on the genre cannot be overestimated in a career stretching back to the mid-sixties that has nurtured the talents of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Coco Montoya, Aynsley Dunbar, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington amongst many others. In a genre that has always cherished experience 'Tough' proves that John Mayall still has what it takes.

OS MUTANTES 'Haih Or Amortecedor' [Release Date 07/09/2009]

CD: Os Mutantes: What fan would have dared dream that an impromptu, one-off reunion at London's Barbican Theatre in 2006 would lead to the first new music from Os Mutantes in over 30 years? Yet here is 'Haih,' conceived by Mutantes founder Sergio Dias with writing collaborations from Brazilian legends Tom Ze and Jorge Ben [who wrote the band's original hit 'Minha Menina']. 'Haih' is not nostalgia, not a remake of a 60's recording, but a vision updated – from the opening sounds of Vladimir Putin addressing the Russian Army, to the saga of Saddam Hussein reimagined as slinky Parisian nightclub blues, 'Haih' is our brave new world twisted through one of the most unique musical sensibilities of the rock era. From the 50's-inflected dreampop of 'Anagrama' to the sly sexual samba of 'O Careca', 'Haih' is both a continuation and a radical update of the Os Mutantes legend. But Os Mutantes have always been about what is happening Now. Formed in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1966 by Sergio and his brother Arnaldo, who blended their love of British Invasion and American psychedelic rock in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, with the lush, jazz-inflected pop that dominated Brazilian music at the time, Os Mutantes created an entirely new sound to match an equally turbulent time in Brazilian history. While the band was leading a growing youth mobilization as part of the Tropicalia movement alongside Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, their country was reeling in the midst of a military coup and ensuing artistic crackdown which eventually left Gil and Veloso imprisoned and exiled. In the few short years they were active, Os Mutantes crafted a distinctive, riotous and modern sound, looping through odd time signatures, veering from 50's doo-wop to devotional harmonies within a few bars, and perfectly capturing the dreams, fears, and infernal beauty of modern life. In the mid 1990's, 20 years after Mutantes' last recording, Kurt Cobain famously issued a plea begging for an Os Mutantes reunion to open for Nirvana. Since then, the band's importance has been cited by current alternative superstars ranging from the Flaming Lips to Devendra Banhart and Beck, who wrote "for years (Os Mutantes) was pretty much the only thing I listened to." Now Beck, and the rest of us, will have new mutant music. 2006 saw an impromptu reunion of the band, with a handful of shows in London, New York, the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, San Francisco, and supporting the Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Os Mutantes found themselves subject to a surreal amount of mainstream attention in 2008 after McDonalds used the song "Minha Menina" in a national TV spot. The news of a new recording from the band has been greeted with rabid anticipation by the music and mainstream press, from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Uncut, Mojo and NME. David Byrne's Luaka Bop label has issued a collection of Mutantes' older recordings – it is one of the label's best-selling titles, and features prominently in their 20th anniversary promotions this year.
