DIAMOND HEAD 'The MCA Years' [Release Date 24/08/2009]

3CD: As the title suggests, the content of this 3-Disc set collates the output of the NWOBHM pioneers during their years as major label recording artists. Diamond Head's first album for MCA, 1982's 'Borrowed Time' set out to strengthen their fast-rising status and as such, showcased much of what was finest about the band – past and present. While the likes of 'Am I Evil?' and 'Lightning To The Nations' were still powerhouses of multi-riff mania, nonetheless what captured the attention were the subtler 'In The Heat Of The Night' (a haunting, blues-rock excursion that did suggest this was a world-class band who refused to be bound to metal conventions – this was Zeppelin-esque in its breadth) and the arcane 'Don't You Ever Leave Me' (a melodic and emotional maelstrom). The follow-up album 'Canterbury' was released in September 1983, preceded by the single 'Makin' Music', the album's opening cut. A fine rocker in the mould of earlier Diamond Head material, it didn't take long however, for a shift in the band's over-all sound to become even more apparent. 'Out Of Phase', much like 'One More Night' and 'I Need Your Love', was drifting into pop rock territory. Elsewhere, the sound was sweeping, grandiose and epic a fulfilment of the band's early musical pretensions. Best of these are 'Knight Of Swords' – the album's intended title – 'To The Devil His Due' and 'The Kingmaker'. And both the Eastern themed 'Ishmael' and the Queen-inspired title track remain hugely enjoyable listens to this day. Completing the set is a rare collection of the band's live work from the period recorded by the BBC and showcases classic performances from the 22nd Reading Rock Festival in '82 and tracks from the BBC In-Concert series from the same year.

BOYZ II MEN 'Cooleyhighharmony – Expanded Edition' [Release Date 24/08/2009]

2CD: For the first time, a 2-CD edition of the classic acclaimed album inits original 1991 sequence along with rare remixes not heard since their original release and features two unreleased tracks, all in a beautifully designed package. 'Cooleyhighharmony' would eventually produce five hit singles and gather several awards with smash hits such as 'Motownphilly,' and the acappella version of the ballad 'It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday,'. But the album's life was hardly finished, as in its wake Boyz II Men released the soundtrack songs 'End Of The Road' and 'In The Still Of The Night (I'll Remember),' a cover of a doo-wop perennial. Those cuts were added to a 1993 reissue of the album, along with other cuts, and the album was re-sequenced and given new artwork. "In R&B there may be nothing more enduring than the male vocal group," writes Amy Linden in the liner notes to this exciting new package. "In the nineties no group kept that legacy alive better, or more successfully, than Boyz II Men … With a pulsating sound what they called 'Hip-Hop Doo Wop' seamless smoothed out harmonies, and collaborations with pop/R&B's preeminent songwriters and producers, including Babyface, Daryl Simmons and L.A. Reid, Boyz II Men revived urban music. And it all kicked off with Cooleyhighharmony."

As Venom's most important release, 'Black Metal' [originally released in 1982] scores in flaming pitch the commandment by which the genre still lives under to this day. This was the album that gained the band recognition and tilted the Heavy Metal world off its axis, inspiring countless of disciples to pick-up the gauntlet and blaze their own trail down the brightly lit pathway scorched by the grooves of this masterpiece. Both Metallica and Slayer were two such bands. This edition for the new millennium serves to enhance the original with a plethora of mouth watering additions. Following the original album are 11 bonus tracks consisting of a Radio One Session, outtakes, 12" remixes and the 7" single, 'Bloodlust'. FRANZ FERDINAND 'What She Came For: Remixes' [Release Date 31/08/2009]

12": A collection of three remixes of 'What She Came For', from the album 'Tonight'. First up is the spooky danse macabre of Drums Of Death. Fresh off his production work on the 'I Feel Cream' album and touring, as part of the celebrated Greco-Roman stable he is about to launch himself big time into the mainstream. Here he bangs 'What She Came For' with a big noisy hammer and squelches and squawks into a rhythmic cacophony that those kids can't get enough of. Next is fellow Glaswegians Tigerstyle. Innovators of the highest order for years, fusing Bhangra with differing dancefloor styles like dancehall, reggaeton and drum & bass. Paul from the band had been wanting a Tigerstyle mix for ages and this is the tune that seems to click. An awesome Bhangra mix, quite unlike anything you've heard from Franz before. Finally is Lee Mortimer, the celebrated house DJ and producer. He DJs across the country with his own brand of jittery jump up house. He can be found DJing at Ministry Of Sound, Back To Basic and Custard Factory. Currently he is working on an EP for Switch's Dubsided label. His mix is a no f**king about killer. Using the shouted chorus refrain he takes no prisoners socking it to the crowd.

SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES 'Communion' [Release Date 24/08/2009]

2CD: In the run up to this, their sixth studio album, The Soundtrack of our Lives made one single a month available via their website www.tsool.net. The most radioactive of tracks with a half life of sixteen centuries; it's elemental and it's the heaviest of metals. Ra88: It's radium. Sunday 21st June: 'Babel On' – The opening track to the whopping forthcoming double album 'Babel On' is the portent of things to come on the record. Full of trademark psychedelia, signature thunder and classic TSOOL riffery. Sunday 19th July: 'Flipside' – Aptly illustrating the flipside to TSOOL. This is a perfect mellow summer sing along. Showcasing why the Swedes do pop best.
