RICHARD HAWLEY 'Truelove's Gutter' [Release Date 21/09/2009]

CD I 2LP [+CD]: Richard Hawley's sixth studio album, 'Truelove's Gutter', is released on Mute on 21st September. Recorded in Hawley's hometown of Sheffield at Yellow Arch studios, Truelove's Gutter' is a testament to his intoxicating song writing talents with eight new classic compositions. The lush but minimal production provides a haunting backdrop to Hawley's unique voice and allows him plenty of space for some outstandingly beautiful guitar solos. "I wanted it to be a listening experience from start to finish, where you couldn't just pause it and go off and watch Coronation Street or whatever," explains Hawley. "Sonically, it flows. It's not jumping all over the place. It just has a mood that goes through the whole thing." Thematically his darkest work to date, 'Truelove's Gutter' explores the idea of people or things that are broken in some way, and the fractured and damaged times in which we live, to which Hawley's lyrics give profound attestation. The Deluxe Vinyl Edition of the album contains 'Truelove's Gutter' on double heavyweight vinyl, plus the album on CD and an exclusive, signed artwork print.

ROSANNE CASH 'The List' [Release Date 05/10/2009]

CD: Rosanne Cash has successfully stepped out from her father, Johnny Cash's, limelight and established herself as an extremely successful songwriter and performer. 'The List' is her 12th studio album and features contemporary interpretations of her legendary father's 'favourite' songs. When she was 18, her father, alarmed at her apparent lack of understanding of country music [having been obsessed with The Beatles and steeped in Southern California rock and pop music], gave her a list of the "100 Essential Songs" and told her that it was her education and she should learn them all. Now 26 years later, and joined by a list of stellar guests including Bruce Springsteen, Rufus Wainwright and Elvis Costello, Rosanne has recorded her own versions of several of those classic tracks from legendary songwriters like Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and The Carter Family. "'The list' was far-ranging and thorough, it was assembled from my father's intuitive understanding of each critical juncture in the evolution of country music. There were old Appalachian folk ballads, and the songs of Jimmie Rodgers and Woody Guthrie. The influence of gospel and Southern blues were crucial. Then he segued into rockabilly and the birth of modern country music by way of Hank Williams, and up to the present, which was then 1973. He also included a couple of his own songs. I endeavoured to learn them all and it was an education." Rosanne Cash

NICK CAVE & WARREN ELLIS 'White Lunar' [Release Date 21/09/2009]

2CD: "'White Lunar' is a selection of pieces taken from various motion pictures and documentaries that we have been involved in, namely 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford', 'The Proposition', 'The Road', 'The English Surgeon', 'The Girls Of Phnom Penh' and a variety of of pieces selected from our vaults. The first CD has the big themes, the orchestra and the songs and the second CD is fractured, haunting and sometimes badly behaved." – Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Accompanying the soundtracks on the second disc are four pieces drawn from the Cave & Ellis archives, all named after craters: 'Magma' is constructed from a chorus of Warrens singing a pitch-shifted riff, 'Zanstra' swarms like a storm of hornets besieging a submarine, 'Halo' finds pastoral calm in the eager teeth of defeat and 'Daedalus' rises sure as the sun, with dewy flute and fluttering piano motes, before a sudden fade. The sequence is conceived as a suite. "Listen to it as you might listen to an instrumental album" recommends Ellis, as "some kind of trip".
