VARIOUS ARTISTS '101 Pirate Radio Hits' 4CD – Release Date 06/04/2009

Radio Caroline is a European radio station that started transmissions on Easter Sunday in 1964 from a ship anchored in international waters off the coast of Felixstowe, Suffolk, England. Although one of a number of unlicensed radio stations based on ships anchored off Britain, Radio Caroline was the first such station to broadcast all day using the English language. This, together with the station's tenacity in surviving for some 40 years, has established Radio Caroline as a household name for offshore radio. With the anticipated release and huge interest in the new Working Title film The Boat That Rocked, (an ensemble comedy, where the romance is between the young people of the 60s, and pop music.) EMI TV bring you 101 Pirate Radio Hits! The 101 brand has real presence in the market and has performed really solidly to date. It only makes sense to release another era defining collection and this time featuring music from the pirate radio airwaves of the 60's…'s all there on 4 CD's….what great value!

VARIOUS 'Rockin' With The Pirates: Big Hits, Classic Tracks & Lost Gems From The Golden Era Of Off-Shore Radio' 3CD – Release Date 13/04/2009

It's the mid 1960's, arguably the finest era in British Music, and while the USA enjoys over 500 radio stations blasting the latest sounds coast to coast, in the UK the BBC plays just 2 hours of Rock N Roll a week. This is Great Britain pre Radio 1, and to get their Rock N Roll fix, over half the population, some 25 million people are tuning into the new breed of offshore pirate radio everyday. Legendary stations such as Radio London and Caroline hosted by a new breed of Disc Jockey, names like John Peel, Tony Blackburn, Simon Dee, Tony Prince, Kenny Everett and many more are playing the hits that matter, and changing the world! In 1967 a British government inexplicably more in love with jazz than the brand new rock sounds of the day finally outlawed the pirates and consigned this pioneering period of broadcasting to history. Soon after, and with no little Irony, the BBC launched Radio 1, staffed almost exclusively by the very pirate DJs that defined this incredible era! 'Rockin' With The Pirates' is an amazing 3CD collection featuring Big Hits, Classic Tracks and Lost Gems from the heady pirate radio days of 1965 – to 1967. Big Hits such as Herman's Hermits 'Wonderful World', The Hollies 'If I Needed Someone', and Jeff Beck 'Hi Ho Silver Lining', Classic Tracks such as Manfred Mann 'I Put A Spell On You', The Animals 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place' and Brian Wilson 'Caroline No', and Lost gems such as Garnet Mimms 'Roll With The Punches', Herbie Goins & The Nightimers 'No 1 In Your Heart' and The Fortunes 'The Idol'.

CLIFF BENNETT AND THE REBEL ROUSERS 'Into Our Lives [The Joe Meek & EMI Years 1961-1969]' 4CD – Release Date 06/04/2009

Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers formed in early 1961 in Hayes, Middlesex, borrowing their name from Duane Edward's hit 'Rebel Rouser'. Honing their skills playing popular Rock'n'Roll covers, their local popularity drew the attention of legendary producer Joe Meek whose influence got them a contract with Parlophone. As their touring circle widened they began playing at the famous Star Club in Hamburg, bringing them into contact with future manager Brian Epstein and in the process becoming one of the few non-Merseyside acts on his books. Unfortunately, despite these early successes the record sales they deserved never quite materialised, with their 2 Top 10 singles and 1 Top 20 album not befitting their songwriting and performing skills. 'Into Our Lives (The Joe Meek & EMI Years 1961-1969)', comprehensively collects together all Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers' UK hits, all the album and E.P. tracks, the B-sides, and a massive 18 previously unreleased performances – in all 117 tracks and over 4 ½ hours of music! Also included are 3 Cliff Bennett solo tracks (all of which are previously unreleased) and liner notes written by celebrated journalist Dave Lang for which Cliff himself has agreed to be interviewed. Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers 'Into Our Lives (The Joe Meek & EMI Years 1961-1969)' is the latest in a line of 4CD multipack collections from EMI Catalogue, following releases from Herman's Hermits, Manfred Mann and Gerry & The Pacemakers.

LINDISFARNE 'At The BBC 1971 – 1973 [The Charisma Years]' 2CD – Release Date 06/04/2009

'Lindisfarne at the BBC (The Charisma Years 1971-1973)' captures one of Britain's most important folk-rock groups at the height of their commercial success. The album draws together an eclectic range of material, comprehensively covering all their existing BBC sessions whilst signed to the Charisma label. Highlights include 'Lady Eleanor' [which reached No. 3 in the UK charts and featured on the 'Fog On The Tyne' album which spent four weeks at the No. 1 spot] taken from the BBC R1 'Sounds Of The 70s' session on 8th June 1971, and a wild rendition of the B-side 'Knackers Yard Blues', which is taken from a concert for John Peel, transmitted on 24th June 1971.

SINEAD O'CONNOR 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' 2CD – Release Date 13/04/2009

The original album is packaged alongside an extra disc containing two previously unavailable tracks, live versions and B sides. Released in 1990, 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' went on to sell over 7 million copies globally and reached number 1 on the album charts in the UK & the US. 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' became Sinéad O'Connor's breakthrough album primarily based on the success of the Prince cover 'Nothing Compares 2 U', which topped the UK charts for a month. The album is full of songs of remarkable intimacy, the songs address relationships with parents, children, and [especially] lovers. 'I Am Stretched on Your Grave', marries a Frank O'Connor poem to eerie Celtic melodies and a James Brown 'Funky Drummer' sample. O'Connor covers so much musical ground on this album: orchestral ballads, intimate confessionals, catchy pop/rock, driving guitar rock, and protest folk, not to mention the nearly six-minute a cappella title track. Sinead foreshadowed the rise of introspective female singer/songwriters like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

LADY SOVEREIGN 'Jigsaw' CD – Release Date 13/04/2009

Back in the studio and back in control, Lady Sovereign's forthcoming album 'Jigsaw' is everything we have come to expect from a rapper whose unique flow and gutsy sensibility has already wowed hundreds upon thousands of fans all over the world. Setting the record straight, 'Jigsaw' tells Sov's rollercoaster story of the last two years with her usual honesty, genre-defying beats and punchy, zest-fresh lyrics. "Like my first album, it's not consistent but it works for me. There are genres on there that ain't even genres, I'm unpredictable when it comes to making music, I don't do one genre! I've got a few classic club tracks on there but also songs that show another side, a more developed style of songwriting. It's another chapter to my life."

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS 'Dark Days / Light Years' CD – / LP – Release Date 13/04/2009

image007.jpg Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce the stunning new album 'Dark Days / Light Years' by Super Furry Animals. Returning to the kraut/psych/rock vibes of their early years, this album is a glorious technicolour journey into the mind of Super Furry Animals, jam packed into 59 minutes of acidic pop genius. Since 2007's 'Hey Venus' the band have been keeping busy with their various side projects, including Daf and Guto's acclaimed work as part of The Peth with Rhys Ifans, Cian's forthcoming Acid Casuals release on his Som Bom label and of course Gruff's Mercury nominated work with Neon Neon.

EDDI READER 'Love Is The Way' CD – Release Date 13/04/2009

Since the early 80s Eddi Reader has helped to define the landscape in which folk artists and singer songwriters navigate. Her incomparable voice and positive outlook have been a much loved fixture in the British music scene since her band, Fairground Attraction, hit the charts with the song 'Perfect' in 1988. After Fairground Attraction's breakup, Reader ventured onto a solo career, to the delight of both fans and critics, most recently with her release 'The Songs Of Robert Burns'. With 'Love Is The Way', Eddi continues to fly the flag for folk and traditional music. The intimate recording process was facilitated by engineer Mark Freegards in his little studio in Glasgow, above the Glasgow-to-Helensburgh trainline. The recording sessions were originally earmarked for extra tracks for a 'Best Of Eddi Reader' record, but Eddi was so taken with the results that they were achieving that the decision was elected to scrap the Best Of and proceed with a completely new record.

THE GEORGE-EDWARDS GROUP '38:38' LP – Release Date 13/04/2009

If you've never heard of it before, that just means it's rare, right? This makes The George-Edwards Group's '38:38' one of the rarest private press albums of all time. '38:38' departs from the norm of the genre: instead of a low-fi demoquality outing elevated mainly by dealer hype, this album is a haunting piece of music that offers an unusually highbrow take on the archetypal Midwestern rock 'n' roll existentialism usually addressed with a solid beat and sneering vocal. Crafting their sound out of the many influences of the day, Edward Balian and Ray George created pop music with acoustic guitars and harmonies, heavily reverberant piano riffs, cold sheets of synthesizer, bells and chimes. Additionally, the immaculate, eccentric production sounds of Beatles recordings were a fundamental inspiration in conceptualising '38:38' as a homespun 'White Album', housed in a plain grey cover devoid of information. After three years spent honing the sounds of '38:38', Balian and George pressed 100 copies to shill publishers and record labels up and down the Sunset Strip. There were no takers, and The George-Edwards Group was dissolved in defeat. This release of '38:38' includes never-seen-before art, photos and original liners / press releases / notes, as well as a song from an equally rare 7" single not found on the original LP pressing.

YEAH YEAH YEAHS 'It's Blitz' CD – 465334 / Ltd CD – / LP – Release Date 06/04/2009

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back back BACK, releasing the follow-up to 2006's 'Show Your Bones', an album described as "a slow-burning masterpiece" by Observer Music Monthly and "one of the albums of the decade" by NME. In reaction to an early leak the digital release of the album was rushed forward to 9th March globally to try the effects of piracy. 'It's Blitz!' will be released physically on 6th April on Polydor, followed a week later by single 'Zero' – a huge, electronic dance-floor anthem of a song. Nothing else feels like this right now. "We've got a death grip on the adolescent way of feeling things," says Karen O, touching on the track's euphoric abandon. 'It's Blitz!' was recorded with Nick Launay [producer of YYY's 2007 released 'Is Is' EP] and longtime collaborator TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. The album sessions took the city dwelling band from the snow-covered fields of rural Massachusetts and Long View Studios, to Sitek's Staygold complex in Brooklyn before heading south to a studio in Tornillo in the Texan desert for further confinement and recording. 'It's Blitz' signals both a glance backward and a step forward for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Guitarist Nick Zinner had brought along an old keyboard he bought on eBay to work with during the writing session not expecting it to end up on the album. However, the sounds of the vintage Arp were so right for the new songs that they found their way into the atmospheric washes of 'Skeletons', the disco wiggles of 'Heads Will Roll', and New Wave melodrama of 'Soft Shock'. "Obviously, synths have been in rock music forever," Zinner says. "But to us it feels new, which is all we really care about-that excitement." The whole record has a new feeling of space and atmosphere, a new sonic dimension, if you will.

SYLVESTER 'Original Hits' CD – Release Date 06/04/2009

Now that it's been tamed into "dance-oriented pop", it's hard to remember that disco in the Seventies, like rap in the early Eighties, was the music of a community. That community was predominantly blacks and gay whites, both upwardly mobile and dreaming of dance-floor transcendence of gritty reality. As long as the slinky Eurorhythms kept pumping, the night would never get tired of Donna Summer, Grace Jones and Sylvester. It's the late Eighties now, the age of AIDS, the naive party fever of disco's height can never return, and Sylvester himself has fallen prey to the scourge. All the more reason, then, for this compilation of what made him the beacon of an era, with his boas and stilettos and outrageous stage shows and Little Richard-style falsetto poised between the church and sin. In fact, like so many black musicians Sylvester first performed in church. In the early Seventies he was asked to join Bay Area drag-queen stars the Cockettes, whose shows he powered with his heartstopping gospel-flavored surrealism. Signed to Fantasy in 1977, Sylvester came out of the closet with the advanced, snaky synthesizer parts that kicked "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)" into the Top 40. Within three years, that very tentative black-gay white community had atomized, and Sylvester returned to his Motown roots while reaching out to a more r&b-oriented audience. But no matter what his musical vehicle, his richly supple voice could stretch and curl beats like no other. Thanks to 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' being featured in the soundtrack to Sean Penn's multi-award winning film 'Milk', Sylvester has enjoyed another day in the sun and this new compilation is the perfect release for fans and novices alike!

JOKE OF THE DAY: For todays joke, please see the sales blurb for the Lady Sovereign album in the above list, cos its really funny!! "Unique flow" REALLY ??
