'Amore Infinito: Duets' CD Release Date 11/05/2009
'Amore Infinito' is the new album by Plácido Domingo, who calls it one of the most important recordings of his career. Before Karol Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II, he began writing poetry during years as a quarry worker, playwright, actor, seminary student and priest. Now Domingo, out of deep respect and reverence for "the greatest human being I have ever known", has created this collection of settings as a personal affirmation of faith and tribute to the late Polish pontiff. It was after his last performance for John Paul II at the Vatican that the legendary tenor expressed to His Holiness a wish to select some of his poems for musical setting. The great singer and a group of composers – including Maurizio Fabrizio, Antonio Galbiati, Fio Zanotti, Kaballà and Domingo's son Plácido jr. – looked for themes of universal significance, such as a mother's love for her children, to inspire melodies of deep emotional appeal. With lyrics in Italian, Spanish and English, these heartfelt melodies are accorded a further degree of spiritual uplift by the orchestration of Jorge Calandrelli – a central figure in the production of this album – performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under Nick Ingman. Along with solo songs, there are also a number of duets, for which Domingo has invited as collaborators some of today's most exciting vocal talents – Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins and Vanessa Williams. Celebrating the eternal power of love, the new album is also utterly contemporary. "This recording has enormous significance for me," says Plácido Domingo. "It will speak not only to religious people but to anyone who respects that uniquely great man, John Paul II, who chose to dedicate his life to the service of humanity and of God."
'Manners' CD / LP Release Date 18/05/2009
"One of the albums of 2009." – NME "Passion Pit are all set to make the transition from blog buzz band to one of 2009's crossover success stories." – Dazed & Confused "Any fan of the Postal Service, Cut Copy, Hot Chip or LCD Soundsystem will love this." – Sunday Times Culture "Passion Pit head the list of new bands to look out for in 2009." – Guardian Guide Following the release of the 'Chunk of Change' EP which garnered plaudits from the likes of Dazed and Confused, NME, Guardian and Radio 1 DJs Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Rob da Bank, Passion Pit now release their debut full studio album 'Manners' on 18th May. An debut that delivers on the blissful and bright promises of early fan favourites like 'Sleepyhead' – it took nearly two months of "explosive" off-the-cuff sessions with producer Chris Zane [Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen] to get there – everything was written and recorded on the fly – but 'Manners' is exactly that, an irresistible, filler-free glimpse into the mind of a man who'd like to unleash his very own Pet Sounds someday. Check the carefully-sculpted songwriting on display: the speaker-panning synths and slightly sinister children's chorus (straight outta P.S. 22 in NYC) of 'Little Secrets' and forthcoming single 'The Reeling', the lead dulcimer loops and melancholic melodies of 'Moth's Wings', the ecstatic, riled-up climax of 'Folds in Your Hands'. All part of a greater plan, the next step of which is taking Passion Pit's live show to a level that matches, and eventually exceeds, Manners' ambition and kaleidoscopic soundscapes. Because when Angelakos says he wants to be the next Randy Newman, he's dead serious. And when he adds that Passion Pit is "a band with a lead songwriter, not just Michael Angelakos and these guys," it's clear he's just getting started.
'Hold On Tight' CD Release Date 18/05/2009
Barely out of high school and discovered at a regional music conference where, Cassadee, the band's firecracker of a frontwoman would sing for anyone willing to listen, she attracted the attention of record label scouts at a time when most of her friends weren't even old enough to drive. Less than two years later she's preparing for the release of her band's first album, 'Hold On Tight', a joint venture between Columbia Records and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's Decaydance Records. Produced by S*A*M and Sluggo [The Academy Is, Gym Class Heroes, Metro Station], the album is a free-spirited spin through life's post-adolescent twists, turns, trials and triumphs. "We have a variety of styles, but they're all pretty-much fast and upbeat, because we wanted a fast, upbeat and happy kind of record that makes you tap your feet and puts you in a good mood," explains Cassadee. "There are heartbroken songs, being in love songs, a song about someone who parties too much… If it's not all about me, then it's about someone very close to me who I can feel for. I just wanted to tell a story, to make it like a movie where you can really get to know someone. I wanted people to really get to know me through the lyrics." Forming a songwriting tandem with lead guitarist Mike Gentile, Cassadee's vocals pierce Hey Monday's guitar-driven underbelly like melodic daggers, her lush, vibrant voice spiraling amidst the tracks like an aerobic workout. Forging her musical path, Gentile and rhythm guitarist Alex Lipshaw riff with an infectious sense of urgency and a propensity for hyperactive pop-rock, and bassist Jersey Moriarty and drummer Elliot James elevate the bottom end with a heave-ho so dynamic, it shakes the album at its very foundation. From the racing guitars that run rampant through the hot summer sun of 'Arizona,' to the more anxious styling of 'Homecoming' and the empowering ballad 'Candles,' Hey Monday deliver an album that embraces the youthful energy of the musicians that created it. Spiteful breakup songs and bitter observations that an ex has moved on mingle with muffled expressions of independence and a quest for one's self in the world around us. Hey Monday can see the light, and it is shining bright before them. Who said the weekend needs to end?
BRITISH SEA POWER
'Man Of Aran' 2D Release Date 18/05/2009
British Sea Power have written and recorded a new soundtrack for the 1934 film 'Man Of Aran'. Available as a CD and DVD package, featuring the film and BSP's soundtrack. The BSP 'Man Of Aran' package includes two discs – the re-scored Man Of Aran DVD, plus the soundtrack by itself on CD. "It's a wonderful film", says BSP guitarist Noble. "The images vary between huge drama and a brilliant kind of ridiculousness – check out the amazing foot-wide bobbled berets that the fishermen wear. It's a great look, like a 1930s Irish version of Jack White or Kraftwerk. It's a film that's also relevant to the current era – a time when the idea of living a simpler life is in the air. The film shows something I'd like to think I could do, but know I never will". 'Man Of Aran' is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. In a series of startling black and white sequences, the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release. The film was created from half a million feet of film shot by Flaherty while living closely with the islanders. But 'Man Of Aran' isn't a straightforward documentary. The 'family' at the centre of the film weren't related, rather a group of islanders cast as the family unit by Flaherty. The fishing expedition for basking sharks which forms the film's dramatic heart was based around methods that hadn't been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Blending reality and staged elements, Flaherty arrived at a compelling document that captures the elemental power of the island's past and present. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1935 Venice Film Festival and the eminent film critic Pauline Kael described it as, "The greatest film tribute to man's struggle against a hostile nature".
