Seizing the attention of the estimated 111 million viewers who tuned in to watch America’s most popular sporting event, the 53-year-old superstar used the Super Bowl half time entertainment slot to shamelessly promote her return to the pop front line. She may have been mercilessly hammered by critics for her first foray into film direction with the pretentious W.E. (“Madonna’s skill with the camera seems to extend to her being able to turn it on” according to the one star Telegraph review) but she was on safer all-singing and dancing ground here.
