To give some background, Gonsalves arrived in London during the bad winter of 1962-63 to escape the legal wranglings of the US Musicians Union. He recorded this gem of a set under the declaration that it took place in Switzerland to avoid further trouble. Teamed with the Brit-jazz musicians Pat Smythe (piano), Kenny Napper (bass), and Ronnie Stevenson (drums), all firm admirers of Gonsalves incredible warmth and depth of playing, Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick turned out to be a killer set of hard-bop numbers and one of the greatest jazz recordings of the sixties.
